Dieses Bild wurde durch die Kombination von zwei fertig bearbeiteten Bildern (siehe Bilddaten) erstellt.  M-51 besteht aus einer großen Spiral-Galaxie (NGC5194) und ihrer kleinen, zerrissenen Begleit-Galaxie (NGC5195). Der Third Earl of Rosse war 1845 der Erste, der die Spiralstruktur dieser Gx erkannte. Die Gx beherbergt einige Milliarden Sterne, die rötlichen Flecken sind Gebiete in denen neue Sterne entstehen, die dunklen Streifen sind Staubwolken.

This image of M51 (NGC5194/5195), was made by combining two CCD frames (sse iamage data). M51  comprises the large spiral galaxy NGC5194 and its smaller, barred  companion NGC5195. The Third Earl of Rosse was the first who discovered the spiral structure of this galaxy in 1845. There are a couple of billion stars in this gx, the red spots are star forming regions, the dark strips are dust clouds.
