Pierre Méchain war der Erste, der im 14 Juni 1779 diese Spiral-Galaxie entdeckte. Im gleichen Jahr hat sie Charles Messier in seinen Katalog eingefügt. Die "Sonnenblummen Galaxie" M63 ist eine Spiralgalaxie vom Typ Sb oder Sc, die ein ungleichmäße Spiralstruktur aufweist, die bis in äußersten Regionen ihrer nur 6 Bogensekunden kleinen, ebenmäßigen Zentralregion verfolgt werden kann. Obwohl sie 6 Grad weiter südlich steht, bildet sie ganz offensichtlich mit M51 und einigen kleineren Galaxien eine physikalische Gruppe, die M51 Gruppe, die in etwa 37 Millionen Lichtjahre von uns entfernt ist.

Pierre Méchain was the first who discovered on June 14th, 1779 this spiral-galaxy. In the same year Charles Messier added it to his catalog. This so called 'Sunflower galaxy' is a spiral-galaxy of the Sb or Sc typ, which shows a not uniform structure one can follow right up to it's only 6 arc-sec wide central region. Situated almost 6 degress more south it obviously forms  with  M-051 and some other small galaxies a physical group. Their distance is 37 million light years from us.
