Diese Spiralgalaxie  wurde 1781 von Messier entdeckt und er notierte dazu: "ein Nebel ohne Sterne im Virgo oberhalb der vorhergehenden Nr. 90, sein Licht ist schwächer als das der Nr. 90.  Nach dem Eintrag des Nebel in Connaissance des Temps  1784 fügte Messier noch hinzu: "die Konstellation von Virgo und hier speziell des nördlichen Teils ist eins der Gebiete mit den meisten Nebeln. Alle diese erscheinen ohne Sterne und können nur in gutenNächten, wenn sie imMeridian stehen, gesehen werden. Auf viele dieser Nebel hatte mich P. Méchain aufmerksam gemacht."

This galaxy was discover in 1781 by Messier and he took the following note: "a nebulae without stars in Virgo just above the temp, no. 90, the light is timmer than that of no. 90. After listing the nebulae in Connaissance des Temps  in 1784 , Messier added to his note the following:  " the constellation of Virgo and in special the northern part is one of the districts with the most nebulae. All of them look like not having any stars and can only be seen when crossing the meridian in a very dark night. This object was pointed to me by P. Méchain".
